Gender Check: Feminity and Masculinity in Eastern European Art

Gender Check: Feminity and Masculinity in Eastern European Art

Friday, November 13th 2009

13 November 2009 - 14 February 2010. The failure of the 'genderless society' espoused to by communism is revealed with this exploration of how the sexes were depicted behind the Iron Curtain. Equality was not originally shared amongst male and female artists in the Eastern Bloc; in fact it was only in the 1970s that women involved in body-related art gained the recognition they deserved. Paintings, photographs, sculpture, installations and films produced since the mid-Sixties by 70 eastern European artists are on display and reflect the socio-political developments in their popular culture since then. more

Edvard Munch and the Uncanny

Edvard Munch and the Uncanny

Friday, October 16th 2009

16 October 2009 - 18 January 2010. The uncanny as depicted in art has long fascinated both artist and art-lover. When Francisco de Goya etched 'The Sleep of Reason Brings Forth Monsters' (c.1799) he hit a nerve; one hundred years later Freud wrote 'The Interpretation of Dreams' and a 36 year old Norwegian artist called Edvard Munch painted 'The Scream'. Blessed and cursed by talent and trauma in equal measure, Munch's work is a disturbing fusion of these two dominating forces. Fear and danger leer in the window of Munch's insecure world; death and evil knock continuously at his door. This exhibition highlights the paranoia, the nightmares and the deeply dark side of the artistic imagination. Wed-Mon: 10.00-18.00 more
