Flowers for Kim Il Sung

Wednesday, May 19th 2010

19 May - 5 September 2010. The contemporary art, poster-art and architecture of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea is largely unknown outside its own country. Now for the first time the western world can view these graphic works, whose designers are keen to flatter presidents Kim Il Sung and his son, Kim Jong Il. Their role in the artwork, and the State's Juche ideology, is dominant to say the least. MAK displays 100 works including oil paintings and large-format portraits of the presidents, while an architectural section includes a model of Juche Tower, the world's highest stone tower, erected in honour of Kim Il Sung’s birthday. Wed-Sat: 10.00-18.00. Tues: 10.00-11.45. Sun: 10.00-18.00 more

Madness & Modernity: Mental Illness and the Visual Arts Vienna 1900

Madness & Modernity: Mental Illness and the Visual Arts Vienna 1900

Thursday, January 21st 2010

21 January - 2 May 2010. Vienna has long been associated with Sigmund Freud and his groundbreaking writings on psychoanalysis. However around the turn of the 20th century, independently of Freud, Vienna found itself at the centre of Europe's medical research into psychiatric illnesses. A fear surfaced, due to the faster pace of life brought about by a modern city and its new technology, that people were living in 'nervous times'. Artists became fascinated with the concept of madness and tried to capture this craziness in their work, while numerous clinics for nervous illnesses sprang up. 'Madness & Modernity' examines this bizarre fascination by providing photographic evidence and archive documents. Tues-Sun: 10.00-18.00 more

The Prince as Collector

Friday, February 12th 2010

12 February - 24 August 2010. One of Europe's oldest families of noble lineage, the Princely House of Liechtenstein can be traced back as far as 1136, to Hugo von Liechtenstein who called himself after the castle and region situated south of Vienna. His present-day successor, Prince Hans-Adam II, has revelled in the age-old family tradition that is collecting works of art. His prolific purchases over recent years have seen the collection swell to over 450 paintings. To celebrate his 65th birthday, these treasures are being shown to the public as one giant exhibition. Indeed in recent years, the Chawan bowls and the tea ceremony itself have enjoyed renewed popularity in countries like Japan. Tues: 10.00-24.00 Wed-Sun: 10.00-18.00 more

Have You Seen My Alps? - A Jewish Relationship

Have You Seen My Alps? - A Jewish Relationship

Wednesday, December 16th 2009

16 December 2009 - 14 March 2010. This exhibition relates the stories of Jewish people and the places associated with their travels over the 'mountains in the middle of Europe': the Alps. Their history with the Alps has often been a troubled one and their reasons for travelling through the Alpine region have been marred by persecution and forced migration. Their first recorded travels date back to the expansion of the Roman Empire. The exhibition takes viewers from Hohenems to Vienna, from Vienna to Switzerland and finally to Merano in northern Italy.
